Kent Monkman

Biography

Born in St. Mary’s, Ontario, in 1965 and raised in Winnipeg, Monkman is a member of the Fisher River Cree Nation. He initially trained in commercial illustration before moving into fine art, film, and performance. His career skyrocketed in the early 2000s as he began incorporating Miss Chief into his paintings and films. He is now one of the most successful and influential contemporary artists in Canada, working from a large studio in Toronto where he employs a team of studio assistants to help realize his monumental canvases.
